Should you buy an lp tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters are one of the most energy-efficient and money-saving improvements one can make to a home. It's possible to save up to 60% off of an entire water heating costs simply by installing one of these affordable and easy to install devices. Tankless water heaters are so efficient because they only heat water on-demand instead of traditional tanks that continually keep water hot. Another good feature of lp tankless water heaters is this: they can be installed in nearly any location out of sight, such as under a sink. Even better - you can now get a tax credit from the government for installing tankless water heaters.

When looking for a good tankless water heater a few features stand out. To begin with, one must decide if they need an liquid propane (lp) or gas-fired heater or an electric model. Electric models tend to produce less hot water per minute, although they're more affordable to run. Large tankless water heaters are also necessary in large households or when many appliances are used at once. For example, running a dishwasher and taking a shower can put too much strain on a small tankless water heater. If a great demand for hot water exists it's possible to select a model designed to heat a whole household's supply of water. Multiple tankless water heaters can also be installed throughout the home. If you live in an area where natural gas is not available, then an lp tankless water heater may be your best bet.

You need to be careful about the capacity of your tankless water heater. For example, a point of use model can't be used for an entire house. It works fine if you want to use it for individual showers, dishwashers, etc. But if you want a tankless water heater that can supply enough hot water for an entire house, then an lp tankless water heater that covers the entire house is a better choice.

Anyone considering an lp tankless water heater should keep in mind a few things. First, they operate differently than tank water heaters, meaning the water needs to run briefly to allow it to warm up. The temperature of the ground water in the area is also a factor since the water isn't kept at a constant temperature in a tank. Therefore, areas with very cold ground water may not work as well with tankless water heaters. Depending on the size of the lp tankless water heater you're buying, the costs can vary greatly. Small point of use units normally cost around $300 to $400. However larger houshold units and cost between $600 and $1000. But don't forget that until the end of 2010 you can get a very generous tax credit from Uncle Sam that will offset your purchase and help you see a return on your investment much sooner.

If you still want to look for ways to lower your costs without sacrificing quality, then look for a reconditioned lp tankless water heater. Many top manufacturers sell them as well, and you can save hundreds of dollars. However, they may not qualify for the tax credit.

No matter which lp tankess water heater you chose, they provide a great way to save money, energy and improve the overall operation of a household.
